Machine vs Overlocker – What’s the Difference?Updated 21 days ago

Sewing Machine:

  • Straight & decorative stitches
  • General sewing, piecing, quilting
  • Uses 1 thread
  • Many machines include an overcasting or overlock stitch to help prevent fabric fraying. However, these stitches do not replace a true overlocker - they won’t trim edges or finish seams professionally.

Overlocker (Serger):

  • Finishes edges professionally
  • Sews & trims in one step
  • Uses 3–4 threads
  • Ideal for garment making and creating clean, durable seams

Do you need both? Whilst not essential, many sewers eventually use both for greater versatility and professional results.
